Abstract (EN)

In generally, initial design process of ships is on the basis of empirical formulations which are obtained from previous experience and are released as rules by class society. These formulations are utility for design departments to reduce necessary time for approval. Since these formulations have some assumptions, class societies apply margin of safety in order to ensure themselves. Ships may have more weights than expected because of these margines and may have low payload. In order to reach optimal structural designs or develop new vessel concepts in the ever-competing ship market, low weight and low cost with adequate safety margin are of vital importance. Investigation of these margines is aim of this thesis. For investigation in this thesis, wave induced vertical bending moment and shear forces are selected as an example. As known, a natural event is examined by three different methods: 1.Experiments, 2.Analitical Methods, 3.Numerical Methods. In this study, results of empirical formulations are given by Bureau Veritas, which is a classification society, for wave induced vertical bending moment and shear forces are compared with those obtained by numerical methods. Value of margines that is applied by class society are explored by using Ansys Aqwa commercial software that uses 3d panel method for numerical method and ship surfaces for a constant block coefficient CB=0.66 and five different length beam ratio (L/B=5.56, 5.40,6.10, 6.12,5.25) are used for this study.
