An analysis of occupational accidents in shipbuilding industry

Abstract (EN)

Between 2003 and 2008, Turkish Ship Building Industry, thanks to world trading volume and correspondingly increasing rate of freight, seriously broke through. At the same years parallelly revival of ship building industry at Region Of Tuzla Shipyards', occupational accidents has also risen, and occupational accidents involving death has increased more than % 60. According to Declaration Of Classification Workplace Hazard Classes Depently Occupational Health and Safety, shipyards where deal with all kinds of ship building and repairing industry falls into the most hazardous workplace. Falling down, electric shock, fire and explosion, crashing objects, squeeze put together the main reasons of occupational accidents at shipyards. Occupational accidents at shipyards can be seperated various titles in itself. But when looking the main reasons of accidents, the first subject is workplace area which is not suitable for production. Especially at Region Of Tuzla Shipyards, narrow working areas affect adversely of workers. When intensive working tempo adds to narrow working areas, different working groups which mustn't be league together league together and hazardous results have occured. In accordence with the 6331 Occupational Health And Safety Law, employers have enjoined with the performing the risk assesment. The aims of performing the risk assessment are eliminating the risks, changing the hazardous risks which can not eliminate with the low hazardous, besides that primarily taking collective protection measures and than taking individual protection measures. From this point of view, important subjects worth-stressing on when working shipyards are making suitableworking places to the changing technologies, taking collective protection measures and finally giving personal protective equipments to the employees and checking the use of them by employees. The purpose of this thesis can be arreyed as, seeing the work places by the shipyards' workers' eyes, learning the awareness of workers about their workplace environment, having knowledge of problems with the taken precautions and workplace environments accord and social factors affecting the their working life.
