Active learning applications in marine engineering

The aim of this study is to determine the specific knowledge, attitudes and skills a marine engineer is supposed to acquire and internalize and based on this determination to form a new, proper and effective cirriculum in compliance with the requirementsof problem based learning method, an alternative education and training model proposed to be used at ship marine engineering departments. The method used in this study is a throughly developed questionnaire conducted through the human resources managers, technical managers and marine inspectors of 16 shipping companies.The overall results of the study are based on the data reached out of the questionnaire conducted.The Study comprises six chapters. The first chapter is focused on the introduction of the overall maritime enviroment and why great numbers of well educated marine engineers are needed by the shipping industry. The second chapter presents and discusses the definition and the liabilities as well as the duties o marine engineers in general. The third chapter is focused on the education of an engineer. What is discussed in the fourth chapter is comparing and constracting teaching and training at marine engineering in particular.The subject covered in the fifth chapter is the problem based learning method, including the feature requirements,as well as pros and cons. The six chapter is devoted to the research aiming to determine the scientific knowledge, attitudes and skills to be internalized by a marine engineer.The overall and the most striking results gained through the survey reveal that medium of instruction in marine engineering education is to be in English language; as marine engineering occupation requires practice rather than being confined within the theorical knowledge only, the cirriculum is to be designed accordingly and life learning ağabeylities and attitudes are to be underlined through the proper means of education and teaching cirricula at schools.
