Examining prodromal symptoms of bipolar disorder in young adult patients with obsessive compulsive disorder

Is obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) a precursor of bipolar disorder (BD)? The aim of this study was to invetigate BD prodrome symptoms in young adult OCD patients in order to explore the relationship between OCD and BD. The study consisted of 66 participants between the ages of 18-25 who were diagnosed as OCD and did not have any psychiatric disorders in the same age group. According to the analysis of the participants' scores on the Bipolar Prodrome Symptom Scale and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, a statistically significant difference was found between the OCD and the healthy group in terms of bipolar prodrome symptoms. It has been found that OCD patients have more BD prodrome symptoms than healthy individuals. In addition, a positive and significant relationship was found between OCD scores and bipolar prodrome symptom scores. As OCD symptom scores increase, bipolar prodrome scores also increase with OCD symptoms.
