The young?s needs for the information implementation and service of regarding emergency contraception methods

This study is designed to determine using status of emergency contraception methods of the last year collage and faculty students in Adnan Menderes University and also their needs for the information and service regarding these methods.The sample of the definitive and cross-sectional research consists of 1291 last year collage and faculty students having applied in 2009-2010 spring registration period. The data was collected with the question form, then Chi-square and Percentage Tests were used to analyse it.88,2% of students belong to 20-24 age group, 52,2% of students are female, and 98,1% of them are single. 58,2% of the students have smoking, alcohol addiction or other kinds of addictions and 56,3% of students are living with their friends. Just 6% of the students are informed correctly about the methods and the duration emergency contraception of using it. 43,8% of these students got the information of the emergency contraception methods from their friends. 37,9% the of students have sexually intercourse. 6,9% of sexually experienced students had pregnancy and 73,5% of them had an abortion to terminate the pregnancy. 45,6% of sexually experienced students are sexually active. 10,6% of sexually experienced students mentioned that they had used emergency contraception methods before. 58,5% of the students express that they want to obtain the information about emergency contraception methods and 75,8% of them mention that they want to get the information form medical staff. 79,3% of the students want a unit to be established that give counselling and service about sexual and reproductive health and 68,8% of students want the unit to exist within the structure of ADÜ-GENÇ.According to the results of the study, the last year college and faculty students, who will be graduated in a short time, have inadequate the information about emergency contraception methods and reproductive health. The students, who are aware of their inadequate the information about emergency contraception methods and their needs for the information, counselling and service, largely want to get the information, service and counselling about emergency contraception. Also, they wish to obtain the information from mostly a unit to be established in ADÜ-GENÇ and medical staff.To results of the study, planing and implementation for education and service must be done and establish a unit in our university to raise the level of health about emergency contraception and sexual and reproductive health. Clinic and academic nurses must take duty and responsibility effectively for not only the education, service and counselling but also planing, organising, carrying out and evaluating.Key words: Emergency contraception, the young, unwanted pregnancy, university students, reproductive health.
