An examination of young people's conception of death and afterlife according to religious education

The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the religious education received by individuals during their youth and their perceptions of death and the afterlife. The study employs a qualitative research method using a phenomenological (experiential) approach. The research population consists of young individuals studying at various faculties of Adıyaman University. For the selection of the sample group, purposive sampling was chosen as a qualitative strategy, and criterion sampling was implemented. Interviews were conducted with 26 participants. Data for the study were collected through semi-structured interview forms. The findings from the data reveal that the religious education received in families and religious education institutions significantly influences individuals' perceptions of death and the afterlife. Participants expressed that formal and informal educational institutions fail to provide adequate information about death and the afterlife. It was determined that the majority of participants could not access sufficient and accurate information about death and the afterlife within their families. In this context, it was concluded that education on death and the afterlife should be provided by experts, as insufficient or inaccurate information negatively impacts individuals' perceptions of death and the afterlife, leading to anxiety and fear about the concept of death. Families, as well as formal and informal educational institutions, are seen as playing crucial roles in fostering a proper and healthy understanding of death and the afterlife.
