Generation of time in Kant and Bergson

The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the generation of temporal experience in the human mind according to Kant and Bergson respectively, and to compare and contrast their main arguments in order to reveal the differences between and possibly discover a reconciliation among their accounts on time. Firstly, it is seen that Kant, in "Transcendental Aesthetic", distinguishes between the pure forms of space and time as two sources of a priori knowledge, whereas Bergson claims the Kantian time(-line) to be merely a projection of real time on a dimension of space, namely a line. Bergson therefore suggests that it is not this spatialized time which brings about the perception of temporality for us, for it only contains simultaneous points on a line, but it is duration, that is, real time, which allows us to experience temporality as it is the act of transitioning itself from before to after. Furthermore, the current study aims to show that although Kant and Bergson's conceptions of time seem to differ as such, they nevertheless suggest similar arguments concerning particularly the generation of number and our perception of motion with regard to the temporal framework of our mind. Finally, by comparing Kant and Bergson's treatment of the methods of intuition and analysis, it is attempted to obtain a better understanding of their philosophies of time.
