CARDAN SHAFT DESIGN USING THE GENETIC ALGORITHM(M.Sc. Thesis)Muhammet YAMANGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYJanuary 2007ABSTRACTCardan shafts are used widely in power and velocity transmission of theshafts that are not on the same plane and direction. In designing of a cardanshaft, specific endurance and working conditions are taken intoconsideration. This case needs the solution of optimization problem. Thesolution, concluded with the traditional optimization methods takes longtime and do not have the logical results. In this study, genetic algorithm, amodern optimization method and used almost all scientific area, has beenused for optimization of a cardan shaft design. The objective functionswhich were optimized, are shaft diameter and thickness of hollow shaft.Cardan shaft takes the power and motion from an electric motor andtransports them to the reductor shaft which is in a certain height.Optimization procedure is made taking into account of rotation angle ofinput shaft, breakage angle of joint, and inner diameter of hollow shaft asdesign variables. Vibration and detention, critical spindle speed, andmaximum torsion angle are used as constraint functions. The comparison ofgenetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming method showedthat genetic algorithm can be used in the design and optimization ofmachine elements. In this study, the design parameters was limited to the diameter of cardanshaft and the thickness of hollow shaft.Science Code : 708.3.028Key Words : Genetic algorithm, cardan shaft, optimizationPage Number : 96Adviser : Prof. Dr. Faruk MENDI
