Abstract (EN)
The main aim of this thesis is to understand the socio-spatial dynamics of the tourism gentrification process in Küçükpazar, Eminönü. Based on this primary objective, the thesis focuses on how the gentrification process in Küçükpazar began and progressed, the actors involved in this process and their scope of action, as well as the local population's discourse on the tourist gentrification process in Küçükpazar and the transformation of their daily practices. With the inclusion of Küçükpazar in the UNESCO World Heritage List, preservation efforts for the historical fabric in the Süleymaniye district, which also includes Küçükpazar, have been brought to the agenda, and an urban renewal process began in 2006 with the implementation of the Süleymaniye Renewal Project. The state, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Fatih Municipality, private companies, and individual initiatives are the main actors in this transformation. Moreover, within the local population, the merchants and residents, whom we divide into two main groups, have often expressed that they have not been able to access many municipal services and that they have experienced a disconnect with the new local population coming to the neighborhood due to demographic changes.
