Abstract (EN)

Purpose : Vitamin D deficiency is a common health problem in geriatric population. Recent trials have shown that Vitamin D is associated with calcium homeostasis, muscle skeletal health and many chronic diseases. In this study, it is desired to investigate the long-term effects of vitamin D deficiency on gait and balance parameters in geriatric patients. Methods : Between January 2013 and May 2018, 370 patients who applied to geriatric clinic of Dokuz Eylul University Hospital , underwent detailed geriatric assessment (AGD) were included in the study. Patients retrospectively screened in 0.-6.-12. months. Sociodemographic characteristics of patients, chronic disease history, drugs used and number of drugs, laboratory findings were evaluated. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to vitamin D level. In terms of balance and function tests, it was examined whether there was any difference between groups at the beginning and at the end of one year. Results: 370 people were included in this study. Patients were divided into three groups ; Group I vitamin D level below 10 ng / dl, Group II vitamin D level 10-19 ng / ml, group III vitamin D level 20 ng / ml and over. Sociodemographic characteristics, chronic disease history, number of drugs used were similar in the groups except education (p> 0,05). The educaiton level was higher in Group III (Vitamin D level > 20 ng/dl ) (p< 0,05). At baseline, Group I (Vitamin D level <10 ng / mL ) was found to have lower Tinetti balance and Tinetti total score (p <0.05). At the end of one year, it was observed that Tinetti balance and Tinetti total scores improved when D vitamin level was increased in Group I, but these scores were significantly lower than Group III (p<0,05). There were no differences between the groups at baseline between the up and go test and Tinetti gait test . Conclusion: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D levels and balance and gait functions. In the group with lower than 10 ng / ml of vitamin D level, it was observed that the balance and walking parameters were deteriorated and the increase in Vitamin D levels improved these functions. Therefore, vitamin D deficiency should be screened early in the geriatric population and treated. Keywords: Vitamin D deficiency, balance , gait
