Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Sarcopenia, which is associated with morbidity and mortality, is a common geriatric syndrome in older adults. In this study, we investigated the relationship between uric acid, a powerful antioxidant and has an intracellular proinflammatory activity, and sarcopenia in older adults. Materials and Methods: This is a longitudinal retrospective study. A total of 936 patients were included in the study. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was evaluated based on the EGWSOP 2 criteria. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of hyperuricemia (for females>6mg/dl, for men >7mg/dl). The patients were divided into two groups as hyperuricemia and control. Results: The frequency of hyperuricemia was 65.40%. Patients with hyperuricemia were older than the control group and female gender frequency was higher (p=0.001, p<0,001, respectively). After the adjustment analysis according to hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, dementia, obesity, high ESC score, thyroid-stimulating hormone, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and malnutrition, sarcopenia was found to be negatively related to hyperuricemia (p=0.034). Besides, muscle mass (SMI) and muscle strength were associated with hyperuricemia (p=0.026 and p=0.009, respectively). Conclusion: In our study, the frequency of sarcopenia was lower, the mean of SMI and muscle strength were higher in older adults with hyperuricemia. Considering the positive effect of hyperuricemia on sarcopenia, avoiding aggressive uric acid-lowering therapy may be a good option in older adults with asymptomatic hyperuricemia. Keywords: Older adults, muscle mass, muscle strength, sarcopenia, uric acid, hyperuricemia.
