Retrospective evaluation of results of intertrochanteric fractures in geriatric patients treated with external fixator

Between 2001-2011 49 patients were treated with unilateral (Orthofix type) axial external fixator for their hip fractures. Those selected patients had higher ASA scores and surgical risk factors. Nine patient were excluded fromthe study due to 8 deaths in first 6 months postoperatively and conversion to dynamic hip screwing in one due to pseudoarthrosis after 6 months. In the reamaning 40 patients mean follow up time was found 15 mounths (7-24).Anatomical results according to Foster criteria were found excellent in 21 (%52), good in 16 (%45), fair in 2 (%5) and poor in 1 (%2,5) patients. Functional results according to Foster criteria were found excellent in 21 (%52), good in 18 (%45) and fair in 1 (%2,5) patients.Due to higher ASA scores, short operation time, less or no bleeding, preservation of fracture heamatoma and biological fixation, less or lack of postoperative pain and short hospitalization time are advantages of the externalfixation of intertrochanteric fractures. Additionally early ambulation and mobilization prevents urinary and pulmonary complications and pressure sores. The extraction of the fixator system is also easy and can be performed inoutpatient clinics.External fixation of intertrochanteric fractures is highly effective and vary provide a successful treatment alternative in selected cases.
