Geometric visuality in Gevaş Seljuk tombstones

The tombstones and sarcophaguses one can observe in the Gevaş Seljuk graveyard structures have been able to make it to our day as far back from the medieval ages, despite all the direct and / or indirect negative conditions of hundreds of years' of duration. The Islamic tombstones arouses a deep respect and curiosity in the eyes of the beholder with a high sense of aesthetics and they are one of the historical areas that still exist. In addition to that, they are undoubtedly important cultural and artistic memory of our country. This study is a confined study of the geometric composition configurations of Seljuk Art tombstones, tombstones that are monumental cultural objects with the images and signs they contain. In this study, taking the relation of the Islamic art tradition to the Medieval ages background into consideration, the cultural code diversification of the aesthetic organisation and geometrical elements of the visual expression styles in the tombstones has been researched. The data has been acquired as a result of the surface exploration done in the Medieval Times Seljuk graveyards, and it has been organised in a catalog, under the title "Geometric Visuality in Gevaş Seljuk Tombstones". It has been researched and evaluated along with methods of literature search and artwork examination within the iconographic and iconological context. Photographs and drawings of the tombstones' have been included in the catalog which was organised within the scope of surface exploration. Other composition components, components that partially exist on the same surface along with the geometric compositions, have been classified and included in our catalog, keeping their structural integrity in the composition in mind. This study is based essentially on the analysis of the geometric forms. It is aimed to ensure that we remember how meaningful and important it is that the religious and cultural values of the Turkish Islamic aesthetics in the Gevaş Seljuk tombstones, tombstones that provide epitomes of the traditional memory, has been transferred to the plastic arts. Another essential aim is to point out the importance of the establishment of an open-air museum of the aforementioned art and culture heritage, a heritage that stands against time, therefore create a national memory awareness.
