Importance of observation and excursion method in biology teaching and the place of it among the other methods(Example of Ankara)

With this research, it was tried to determine importance of observation and excursion method in biology teaching and education and the place of it among the other methods.In teaching biology, in order to reach aims a number of teaching methods are used one of the student centered methods is observation and excursion method. By means of observation and excursion method which has great significance in teaching biology, students learn easily because they are actively involved in investigation of objects and occurences.This research was applied in state schools in Yenimahalle, Çankaya, Sincan in Ankara. 18 Teachers and 336 students attended to this research. A poll was prepared to teachers and students for obtaining data about determining position and importance of the observation and excursion method between the other teaching methods in biology teaching. At the analysis of the obtained results, SPSS package programme was used. While determining the oppinion of students and teachers, frequency (f) and percentage (%) were used.At the end of the study we determined that, biology teachers often use telling, and question-answer method. And they sometimes use laboratory, solving problem, demonstration and discussion methods. And they almost never use observation and excursion method. Biology teachers choose the observation and excursion and laboratory methods as the most effective method.Some of the reasons of observation and excursion method not being used are that teachers have to take too much legal responsibility and they have difficulty in controling and organizing the students and it also requires a great amount of budget. Most of the teachers and students wanted to utilize this method while they were learning ?Biodiversity and Classification of Organisms, Ecology, ?Earth and Organisms?, Behaviors of Organisms.
