Labour experiences and problems of seasonal agricultural female workers: The case of Düzce, Çilimli

This study aims to address the difficulties in the living and working conditions of female seasonal agricultural workers in Türkiye in the context of gender and to analyze these experiences within the framework of intersectionality theory.The socio-economic difficulties experienced by women were evaluated across multiple dimensions, such as gender, education level, age, position in the family and work experiences. The research problem is to make visible the structural inequalities that female seasonal agricultural workers are exposed to and to reveal the effects of these inequalities on different social groups. The main question of the research is how the gender-based disadvantages of female seasonal workers intersect with other social factors. The data of the research were collected with qualitative research methods. Purposive sampling technique was preferred among qualitative research methods. Within the scope of the study, in-depth interviews were conducted with women living in tent areas and field observations were carried out. Participants were diversified according to criteria such as age, education level, family position and disadvantaged situations. Interviews were conducted with participants who were suitable for the research questions and were terminated at the point where the data began to repeat. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations with 12 women. Thematic analysis method was used in the analysis of the data and was interpreted in line with the theory of intersectionality. The findings show that women face different disadvantages such as age, education and care responsibilities along with gender inequality. It was determined that women frequently face problems such as low wages, long working hours, job insecurity and social exclusion in their working conditions. In addition, inadequate health and hygiene conditions in tent areas negatively affect women's physical and psychological health. In conclusion, this study draws attention to the invisible labor and structural inequalities of women seasonal agricultural workers and offers suggestions for policies that can improve their living conditions.
