A sociological analysis of daily interaction practices in the context of commuting routines: Istanbul metro example

This thesis aims to investigate the metro with its interaction dimensions in order to reveal how individuals living in Istanbul experiences daily life. As a public space, the subway stands out as the most important area where people can carry out their daily activities and participate in various social processes. It is not possible to consider the urban experiences of a society independently of its daily life and spatial practices. The research will show the mundane aspects of everyday life by focusing on underground tunnels rather than a street-level view of the city. The commuting routines and underground rhytms of the individuals who overlap and interact with the space, which constitutes daily life in the modern city, from the underground rhythms. A metro area is like a biopsy of the metropolitan population: a large community of people. It is like the stage where modern life, work, haste, lifestyle are animated by daily interaciton patterns, with the city's surface and underground tunnels far from the passage of cycles. By examining the overlooked events and encounters of individuals who commute by subway, this study aims to examine the effects of the routine flow of daily life, thoughts about the city, and interactions with other people that affect the interactions of individuals. Metro spaces, with their ground-based networks of interaciton and connection, offer a familiarity of our public spaces that allows a community and a cultural identity to develop and enables us to reflect on our perception of space, and out understanding of who we are. This study requires a phenomenological examination of the metro, one of the public transportation vehicles, from the experience through the lenses of the movements and interaction. Finally, in this research, which will use a conceptual framework built around the concepts of space, interaction, rhythm, and temporality, it is aimed at paying attention to urban rhythms and providing a new understanding in the analysis of everyday life.
