Giorgio Agamben's critical contribution to Western political thought: "Homo Sacer"

Effects of the Cold War influence the world both politically and socially. When the Cold War ends, the whole world goes into turbulence. With the collapse of the USSR, it is claimed that liberal democracy is the destiny of the people. Cited discourses, which take into account the end of history, mean the absorption of the political. However, reality does not display that the end of history has come about at all. All the world undertake in search of an identity. Problems of succession signalise themselves in the Eastern Europe. The question of succession also mark the rise of violence. Despite all the negativities, the European intellectuals begin to look for the signifiers of the name Europe. They begin to rethink integration. At the same time nationalism debates flared up. A method of restructuring seek in the world. Restructuring is not as easy as one might think. Violence has come in the main problem in the world. One of the biggest problems are immigration in these years. In short, it is a state of crisis. These problems preoccupy the mind of Giorgio Agamben. Therefore, Agamben consider the possibility of politics. In 1995, he published the first book in his series of nine books called "Homo sacer". His works are an attempt to clear the ground of Western politics. Using the theories of biopolitics, political theology, and the state of exception, he open to discuss concepts such as sovereignty, violence, nation-state, political subject. He indicate the possibility of thinking about politics in a different way. The first part of the study will focus on the life and works of Giorgio Agamben. At the same time, Agamben's encounters and interactions will be discussed. As the author of "Homo sacer", Agamben's a historical sociological portrait will be drawn. In the second part of the study, nine works of "Homo sacer", which were copyrighted within the scope of project, will be examined. By plotting cognitive map of "Homo sacer" project, a basis for Agamben's contribution to modernity will be formed. In the third part, firstly, an excavation will be made about the crisis horizon of classical sociologists and the crisis nature of modernity will be discussed.
