Contribution of Giuseppe Donizetti to Turkish music culture and analysis of his works

The subject of the research is the works produced, composed and harmonized by Giuseppe Donizetti, who had an important role in Turkish military music tradition and Turkish music culture, and his contributions to Turkish music culture during his service in the Ottoman Empire. The purpose of the research is, along with examining the historical development of Turkish military music tradition, to examine the life, works, and pieces of Giuseppe Donizetti, who organized Musika-i Hümayûn in a modern way, which is the basis of orchestra, band, and music schools today, and pioneered the establishment of the polyphonic and harmonic music understanding in our country, and to reveal his contributions to Turkish music culture. The study was carried out on the basis of historical research and musical analysis. The sample of the research consisted of the resources available on the life and work of Giuseppe Donizetti and 10 pieces from the composition album "Raccolta Di Diversi Pezzi Di Musica Composti Da Giuseppe Donizetti Per Musica Militare" from 1832, which were selected according to their readability, genre, and similarity. In the musical analysis stage of the research, the selected pieces in the sample were analyzed technically in terms of form, harmony, and performance. In the research, it was determined that Giuseppe Donizetti had an important role in the music reforms of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Mahmud II and Sultan Abdulmecid, that he ensured that an understanding of polyphonic and harmonic music was adopted by the society by creating an institutional structure with band, orchestra, opera, ballet, theater and music schools in Musika-i Hümayûn, which was established in the place of mehterhane (Ottoman military band), that he was a pioneer in initiating practices such as including the band in state ceremonies, including official anthems at state ceremonies, and supporting domestic instrument making, and that he improved the musical repertoire with the pieces he composed and harmonized. It was observed that the pieces in Giuseppe Donizetti's composition album "Raccolta Di Diversi Pezzi Di Musica Composti Da Giuseppe Donizetti Per Musica Militare" that were included in the analyses were mostly in the genres of waltz, mazurka, canzone, and march, that he composed his pieces in ternary form that follows an ABA structure; and he produced the first examples of polyphonic pieces for Traditional Turkish Music in a plain and simple style. In the light of the findings, it was concluded that Giuseppe Donizetti made important contributions to Turkish music culture.
