The effects of migrations on European Union politics: The case of Syria

The aim of this study is to analyze the political effects of the migration movement after the Syrian civil war on the European Union. The emergence of various crisis areas, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, and endless conflicts and wars, especially after the power vacuum after the end of the Cold War, has made millions of people living in these and similar regions become refugees.In the study, it is aimed to reveal the effect of the migration movement towards the European Union on the politics of the Union and whether this situation affects the xenophobia and the right-wing political movement. The effects of migration movements towards a center of attraction created for the purpose of a war-free society, such as the European Union, was investigated. In the study, it has been acted on with the fact that the problems of humanity in geographies such as Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, which can be considered quite far from the EU in terms of mathematic location, cannot be ignored in the globalizing world and their effects will be felt all over the world. In the first part of the study, the causes of migration were tried to be explained and the effects of human rights violations and conflict zones that caused forced migration in the world were tried to be determined. In the second part of the study, the approach of the European Union to migration is examined within the framework of the founding agreements and the shaping of the common migration policy. In the third part of the study, the effect of the migrant movement towards the European Union on the politics of the Union was examined. In this context, the effect of the increasing immigration wave on the Union economy, especially after the Syrian crisis, was also emphasized, and then the effects of the political sense on the Union countries and EU institutions were examined. Is the increase in far-right political discourse in the European Union countries in recent years a result of foreign migration? This is the basic question that the study seeks to answer. In order to answer this question, the political developments in EU countries and the successes of far right parties by making the immigration problem a propaganda material during the election periods are presented. When the peak periods of the Syrian refugee crisis are examined, it is observed that the far-right parties have started to be effective in the EU Parliament as well as the successes they have achieved in the national parliaments. In the period when the crisis started to stagnate and lose its effect, it was observed that the influence of far-right parties decreased. As a result, it was concluded that there was an increase in xenophobia as the immigrant density started to increase by reaching the study target, which led to far-right discourses, and an increase in the vote rates of the parties that voiced these discourses.
