The effects of migration on rural settlement patterns: A case study on döşemealti camili village (Neighborhood)

This thesis aims to examine the spatial impacts of migration in rural areas through the case of Camili Neighborhood, located in Döşemealtı district of Antalya province in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Migration in rural settlements leads not only to demographic changes but also causes significant transformations in the physical environment, building types, land use, and social relations. Camili has been selected as the study area due to the prominent presence of seasonal migration, rural-to-urban migration, and reverse migration patterns. The study is supported by social surveys, inventory studies, and field observations. Interviews conducted with residents and survey results reveal that migration has triggered structural changes in the neighborhood, with a growing trend toward modernization in building materials and housing types. However, despite this physical transformation, the spatial memory shaped by collective social consciousness continues to persist. The attachment to traditional settlement patterns and usage habits contributes to the preservation of the neighborhood's spatial identity. The findings provide valuable insights into the relationship between physical transformation caused by rural migration and the continuity of cultural structures.
