SKY BRIGHTNESS MEASUREMENT AND LIGHT POLLUTION MAPPING: A case study in Malatya ABDULVAHAP YILMAZ Inonu University Instute of Science 104+ x pages 2022 ADVISOR: Ass. Prof. Dr. Tuncay ÖZDEMİR The use of light in the wrong place, in the wrong amount, in the wrong direction and at the wrong time is defined as Light Pollution (IK) [3]. If the luminaires, which are especially preferred for street lighting, go beyond the area to be illuminated, it will both cause light encroachment and mean wasted energy. In this thesis, night sky brightness measurements were made in an area of 301.1 km2, including Malatya city center, Battalgazi and Yeşilyurt central districts, using the square method in the area determined within the borders of Malatya city center, Yeşilyurt and Battalgazi central districts, and the light pollution map and the occurrence of faulty lighting caused by the wrong lighting. energy wastage was calculated. The angle dependent measurements (between the zenith and the horizon) required for the calculation of the energy loss were taken separately for each of the east, west, north and south directions at 7 (seven) different locations. All measurements were entered into a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program and isotherm curves were drawn. The amount of energy wasted due to faulty lighting in Malatya was calculated as 122.7 Mlm. Keywords: Sky Glow, Light Pollution, Loss of Energy, Street Lighting, Humidty
