Evaluation of the relationships between the anatomical positions of the impacted maxillary canines and the nasal septum deviation

Objectives: Maxillary canines are the most commonly impacted teeth after third molars. Due to their anatomical position in the maxilla, impacted maxillary canines may be in close relationship with the nasal cavity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationships between the anatomical positions of impacted maxillary canines and nasal septum deviation (NSD) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: 120 patients with and without impacted canine teeth were included in the study. The embedded canine position, angulation and distance to the nasal cavity were evaluated via CBCT images of the patients; NSD angle was measured. The data obtained was evaluated statistically. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the degree of canine angulation values on the left side in men compared to women (p = 0.036). NSD degree values on the right and left sides did not show a statistically significant difference according to the impacted canine position (p>0.050). Conclusion: No significant relationship was found between the anatomical positions of the maxillary impacted canines and NSD. The degree of embedded canine angulation is higher in men than in women. A significant difference was detected in the degree of angulation of the impacted maxillary canines on the left side, especially in men.
