An action research for visual arts education based on visual pedagogic awareness

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this research is to examine how visual pedagogical awareness based on visual culture can be developed in the elective art workshop Graphic Design course in the Fine Arts Education department and how it is reflected in the design processes. This research, which was designed with an action research, was carried out in the Elective Art Workshop Graphic Design I and Graphic Design II courses in Anadolu University Education Faculty Fine Arts Education Painting Teaching Program. The data of the research were obtained in a total of 19 weeks, in the fall semester and spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year. The participants of the research are 5 volunteer students studying in the 2nd grade, taking the Elective Art Workshop Graphic Design course, the lecturer and the researcher. In the research, video recordings of lectures, audio recordings, focus group interviews, semi-structured interviews, documents and student studies were used as data collection tools. The data of the research were analyzed by descriptive analysis and document analysis method. In the research, themes were created by using the NVivo Pro 12 program. Within the scope of the research findings, it has been observed that visual pedagogy education contributes to visual arts education, students develop awareness of the culture they live in, their environment, the visuals around them, visual culture elements, visual images in social media, and in this context, students can create design studies based on visual pedagogical awareness. The findings obtained in the research were discussed in the literature and suggestions were made.
