Impact of the texture on student practices in two and three dimensional works in visual art course

Texture is the surface of the whole visual field that meet the retina of our eyes first. Every living or non-living creature is covered with various textures and we first meet the textures when we look at them or touch them. Besides giving information about the characteristic features of the objects, textures can give different impressions to the persons. The texture has been intensively used by various artists since it has strong impacts upon both two dimensional and three-dimensional works. In the Visual Arts course, "texture" is a significant subject to be handled in terms of the impressions it leaves. In this research, the impact of the "texture" in two- and three-dimensional applications has been dealt with. The research was carried out with 20 voluntary 8th class students whose age varies between 13 and 14. Paintings of two painters who use the element of texture intensively in their pictures were shown and students were requested to reinterpret the painting they have chosen with their own texture designs. Students were observed by the researcher during their practice period, and they answered the "interview form of two-dimensional practices" at the end of the process. Following their painting practice, students transferred their works into three dimensions with clay. During their practice, they were observed by the researcher and they answered the "three-dimensional practices interview form" at the end of their work. Also, at the end of the practices, they were asked about what they cognitively remember with "texture". Data emerging during the process were analyzed with content analysis and descriptive analysis and they were tried to be interpreted with percentage calculation in a more detailed way. According to the findings derived from interview forms and observation forms, it has found that students eagerly took part in the courses and they generally enjoyed these practices. In the light of this research, according to the obtained results, some suggestions were given for the researchers and trainers who will work in this field. Also, the research is thought to contribute to the other researchers.
