Ensuring power efficiency on OLED/AMOLED displays with image processing-based methods

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) / AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display technologies, which are becoming more widespread today, are evaluated with positive opinions by individuals who use these technologies in their devices, see these screens, and experience them. OLED/AMOLED displays, which are made of organic components, contain electrodes where each pixel produces its own light. OLED/AMOLED screens' high brightness, excellent visual quality, light and flexible features, good contrast, and low power consumption have increased their importance in terms of preferability. Energy-saving displays are needed to significantly reduce the energy consumption of a device. In this study, it is aimed to save energy on OLED/AMOLED screens by using image processing-based methods such as HE (Histogram Equalization), BBHE (Brightness Preserving Bi Histogram Equalization), DSIHE (Dualistic Sub Image Histogram Equalization), CLAHE (Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization), AL (Adjusting Luminance), AS (Adjusting Saturation) and dimming the left side of the screen, which are image enhancement methods on OLED/AMOLED screen images of 1024*1024 size. Additionally, the energy savings achieved in AMOLED and OLED screen displays were compared with the methods used. The results obtained were evaluated according to criteria such as visual quality of the screenshots, image distortion, lightness/darkness and distance from the original. As a result, in providing power savings in screenshots, the lowest efficiency among the four images was in the saturation adjustment method, which was 3% on average, while an average of 17% power efficiency was achieved in the brightness adjustment method. In other image enhancement methods, efficiency was achieved in some images when these methods were first applied, while in some images, efficiency was achieved by applying brightness reduction in addition to the methods. In this respect, it can be said that the most effective method in energy efficiency is brightness adjustment. However, in images where brightness adjustment is applied in addition to the method used for energy saving, darkening has been observed, deviating from the original. When the resulting screenshots are examined, it can be said that the best quality images in terms of visuality are those in which the saturation adjustment method is applied.
