Analyzing the newspaper headlines of the matches played by Fenerbahçe Football Club in the Europa League from the perspective of semiotics

This study aims to analyze the headlines of newspapers based on the call function, examining how the structuring and persuasive power of the media is transformed into social acceptance. Texts appear as semantic wholes, consisting of phrases and situations that consist of individual words and contain a meaning and integrity. When the texts created by individual words and statements over time are approached with a different reading, it can be revealed what kind of world they display. In other words, it can be seen more clearly what kind of world these texts refer to, how they interpret this world and how they direct the masses. From this point of view, the analysis examples on the subject of 'Sports', which constitutes one of the important agenda items of societies, mobilizes social structures and is generally considered together with the concept of spending free time, reveal extremely interesting data. This study aims to investigate how the football matches between the European Teams of "Fenerbahçe" sports club, as one of the teams that have focused the increasing interest and excitement in recent years, are reflected in the newspaper headlines. Each newspaper headline can be evaluated from different perspectives on the day, context and scale on which it sets the agenda, and exhibits and even directs the values of the 'given society', its perspective on the subject. This study, which aims to analyze the newspaper headlines of the European league football matches held between 1959 and 2023, was carried out based on the newspapers Hürriyet, Milliyet, Cumhuriyet, Fotomaç and Fanatik.
