Abstract (EN)

A sign is a means that provides communication through forming associations or substituting with concepts. All the social, natural, artificial, and artistic signs can be analyzed in the field of semiotics. This study focuses on a review of the concept of sign in general, semiotics as a discipline, and analysis of artworks with respect to semiotics. Specifically, it provides an analysis of the works created by Cihat Burak in light of his artistic character.Cihat Burak as an artist fulfills an important role in the history of Turkish art-painting, especially in term of innovations. With respect to both his synthesis of images in the past and in his era with his brush, and his passing over the stories of various sections of society to a broader audience, his paintings, ceramics and writings have been witnesses of the times he lived while they describing and criticising his era in a thought provoking way. In these respects, this study includes a summary of the changes in the cultural and artistic climate of Turkey, a descriptive synopsis about Cihat Burak and a set of analysis regarding his works.
