Abstract (EN)

More than words, symbols hold an impressive part in human life with their abundance in definitions. Eye symbol, the research subject of this study is one of these symbols and all in all, one's window to the world can be regarded as the spot where good or evil all thoughts are reflected to the outside world. It is seen that there are spesific common grounds and beliefs on eyes, looks in nearly all societies, geographies and periods of history. Having had a visual language, from past to present jewelleries, with their symbolic meanings, have been significant means that show the essence of age, cultural and economic structures of the society and the status of the individual within it.. Having been beheld that it has an unbreakable bond with belief system, jewellery has never been far away from being proctectative in all ages and in neary all societies. And the jewelleries with eye forms has always been seen as strong talismans that ward off the evil in every culture and religious belief. Eye form has also been used not only as absolute belief systems or protective talismans but also as it seems pretty. Having a strong symbolism and functionality in the life of individual and society in both past and present, the eye form has been considered to be directly associated with social and economic fluctuations and moves towards the future as an almost indispensable part of our historical culture. In this study, the development process of the eye form from past to present is analyised and its importance in both traditional and modern art is studied. According to this view, firstly the eye symbolism and the eye forms in different geographies are presented, seconly the reflection of eye form on jewelery and finally its status in modern art is evaluated.
