Abstract (EN)

This thesis, titled as "Relationship Between Graphic Design and Ephemera, and Sait Maden Archive", studies how graphic design products figure by name 'ephemera' as an archive, collection material. Moreover, this thesis also researches the contribution of a professional graphic designer or a graphic design historian for creating 'metadata' of ephemera document or restoration process of ephemera. The first part of the research is structured as "definition and positioning", defines 'graphic' term and graphic design discipline within the frame of 'etymology' and 'terminology' to mention the relationship between ephemera and graphic. "Graphic Product" phenomenon is explained from the point of graphic design discipline and interdisciplinary interaction. Changing and evolving positionings of the graphic design discipline, besides the spatial transformation and periodical phases of graphic design discipline is discussed. The second part of the research is structured as "conceptual frame", focuses on ephemera concept. In this section; the definition of ephemera, the historical development of ephemera in Turkey, accessibility and value as resource/document, and graphic data of ephemera are explained. In this context, I interviewed with pioneers and masters, in addition, I studied the subject with related disciplines. The last part of the research is structured as "practice stage" and in this section, ephemera documents involved in the archive of Sait Maden, who is a graphic designer and graphic design historian, are described according to archive principles. Typographic style and format of selected ephemera documents are interpreted in the context of the period which documents belong to and the style of this period, furthermore, in order to contribute the creation of metadata, reviews are carried out within the frame of graphic design.
