Education in Gümüşhane (1960-1980)

This thesis examines the general state of education in Gümüşhane province between 1960 and 1980. The study's starting point is the understanding that, during this period of major political, social, and economic transformation in Turkey, education was shaped not only by central decisions but also by local conditions. In this context, Gümüşhane has been considered an important example in terms of revealing how local education is shaped at the provincial level. As in Turkey generally, the 1960-1980 period was one in which education in Gümüşhane developed amid various problems and limited resources. Throughout these years, education was not confined to school buildings and curricula alone; it remained directly connected to the region's social structure, economic conditions, and population movements. Decisions made at the center were implemented in accordance with local conditions in Gümüşhane. During this period, there were clear disparities in educational opportunities between the provincial center and the districts and villages. Over time, the number of schools, teacher supply, and physical conditions changed, and access to educational services was difficult in some areas. The rise in student numbers increased the need for teachers, directly affecting the quality of education. In rural areas in particular, educational activities continued to be carried out under conditions of limited resources. Economic conditions and migration movements were the principal factors shaping the structure of education during this period. Out-migration from the region in particular affected both student numbers and school organization, thereby also complicating the continuity of education. Education functioned not only through formal institutions but also as part of social life. Educational practices developed in line with the region's needs and available resources, forming a structure specific to Gümüşhane.
