Bicycle transportation planning for Gumushane province

The growing world population and developing automotive industry have brought more transport needs and are caused to a growing momentum to motor vehicle industry. It is indisputable fact that global warming is a major problem in the world. There is a huge contribution of fossil fuels in to global warming caused by greenhouse gases. Because motor vehicles using fossil fuels produce carbon dioxide gas, which is a major threat to global warming. Moreover, the use of motor vehicles also affects the country and the individual economy due to the oil consumption In the purpose of this study is to evaluate the city in terms of bicycle transportation and to design a bicycle paths considering the urban characteristics of Gumushane and its current transportation network structure for the use of a bicycle as a means of transportation in Gumushane and its popularization throughout the city. As part of this aim it is aimed to promote the use of a bicycle for transportation purposes as an alternative to motor vehicles for people in daily life. A total of 10.500 meters of the bicycle paths have designed within the scope of this study, and 8.300 meters of this road is Route 1 which have made on the side of the Erzurum-Trabzon highway. The other one, which will be called Route 2, have designed on Ataturk Street and Cumhuriyet Street as 1.700 meters and on the access roads between the city center and the highway side as 500 meters. The bicycle paths have designed along the selected routes, the implementation projects and approximate costs of these bicycle paths have prepared, and a survey study has conducted including the city center and the university campus. The results of questionnaires have evaluated with Chi-square, Phi and Cramer's V tests. As a result, bicycle use in transport investments for sustainable transport it has to been found as one of the most important solutions to urban transportation problems, as it is a healthy, safe, economical, environmentally friendly mode of transportation and beneficial in terms of accessibility.
