Architectural and urban abstractions in contemporary photography : Murat Germen

Nowadays the photography liberated by the development of the technology and digital processes allow abstraction with experimental, conceptual and fictional approaches. This environment where digital images replace reality and are open to manipulations, has led artists to question what the presented reality is instead of expressing the truth directly in their works. The artists who have a matter with architecture, urban and life have developed new languages of expression by taking approaches which value personal experience and which are relevant to discovering "beyond" the visible also they fictioned their subjective worlds. During the process where new ways of seeing are sought, creativity has come into prominence. Artists have invited us for thinking with the effort of prompting perception by using defamiliarization methods which are used to transfer emotions. Murat Germen, an important name of contemporary Turkish photography with his vision of being an urban planner, architect and photographer; he creates "narrative" fictions by combining creative thinking practice with photography by way of centering space and city. His works in todays technological world of speed on the environmental urban, social and personal dilemmas of everyday life try to distrupt the normalized perceptions of individuals by mirroring problems and confronting them the viwer. The artist who has a different "matter" in each photographic series, demands the viewer to the "essence" beyond the layers by including them in this layered compositions. He presents the conflict between himself and the world he is living in by fantasying a new universe and by engaging his photographs with technology in an interdisciplinary environment. He reproduces the space with using metamorphosis and transformation in his photographs. Focusing on the ways of seeing, Murat Germen combines photographs taken from different positions on one surface and he breaks the normal flow of time and creates distinctive and sophisticated language of expression which encloses fluidity and motion.
