Abstract (EN)

In this thesis study, the subject of portrait which starts from the Stone Age up to present day art was reseached. The research was diveded into three main parts, pre 20th century, post 20th century and the 21st century. In the first part, illustrations have been taken from different socities and with respect to the improvement of the portrait dimensions the primary examples of mummy portraits from ancient Egypt have been examined. The improvement of portrait drawings peeked during the Renaissance period, during which, drawings were technically progressed. Renaissance and post Renaissance portrait study examples have been examined and the point of view of the several artists have been investigated.The occurance of scientific discoveries during the 20th Century also effected the improvement in art. That is why the second part after 20th century had been taken into consideration.In the 20th century, how the plastic components transfer to the portrait is supported by the portrait works of artists as the art trends depend on the reform produced by the pioneer artists.In 1945 the world?s art center had changed by the way of immigrant artists and the basis of the new understanding of art had been established. A lot of new artists and styles ware born. For that reason second part of the thesis is divided into two as pre 1960 and post 1960.In the final part, the improvement of portrait in the 21st Century has been discussed. Portrait studies in different diciplines by using the abilities of technology in the present century has been researched. The most important aim of the conclusion is; in the light of art history?s portrait adventure, researching all the improvements of portrait in today?s art and explaining the approaches of portrait by examples.At the end of the thesis , applications of portrait had been done by using different techniques and developing projects.
