Ethnic conflicts in Georgia: The example of Abkhasia and Ossetia

Ethnic conflicts are products come out when ethnicity enters into political patterns.From this point of view, Ethnic conflicts are expressed as changing institutionalized systems of inequality in ethnic groups or making ethnicity a political lever, rather than a psychological or cultural or social data for the purpose of development. Ethnic problems may occur between ethnic groups and state as well as coming out in the form of gunfight. After dissolution of the Soviet Union and ending of the cold war, Soviet Union member states began to declare independence. In this period, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia in South Caucasus entered the system as an independent actor by declaring independence. As a result of declaration of independence ethnic disagrement, named as passivized problems, within the borders of some countries turned into conflict zones with authority-power gap. The demand of secession of Abkhaz and Ossetian from Georgia is the source of Abkhazia-Georgia and Georgia-Osetia conflicts. Regional Powers such as Russian Federation, Turkey and Persia caused regional competitivesness to fill the power gap came out after dissolution of the Soviet Union. Within this framework, regional power's established reciprocal dialogues and cooperation between South Causcasus States have an impact on determining way of ethnic-based conflicts. Within the scope of the close environment doctrine that Russia has implemented in its foreign policy, it is to use the said regions in order to manipulate the international policies followed by the countries that have ethnic separatist regions called frozen problems in their geography in line with their own interests.
