Are students of fi̇ne arts more prone to bi̇polar di̇sorder compared to other department students?

The belief that creativity and artistic talent/creativity are related to psychopathology is common. In the relations between creativity and psychopathology, mood disorders are more prominent. Patients may be more productive in mania and hypomania periods of bipolar mood disorder. Considering these data, we aimed to investigate whether there is a predisposition to bipolar disorder in people who have an artistic creativity. 157 from art department and 157 from different departments of Law, Science and Literature and Education faculties were randomly selected. Groups were compared according to mood disorder questionnaire (MDQ). The MDQ scale was 50.3% in the students of the Art, and 26.8% in the students in different departments (p <0.05). The questionnaire was completed by the participants and that they might not provide. The high prevalence of bipolar disorder with MDQ scale in art students supports the relationship between artistic talent / creativity and bipolar disorder.
