A research on the educational objectives of the fine arts high schools and the effects of the sports high schools over the education environment as assessed by the arts and music teachers

The purpose of this study is to explore how the objectives of the Fine Arts and Sports High Schools that emerged as a result of the merging of Fine Arts High Schools with Sports High Schools, as well as the specific educational objectives of the art and music courses and the effects of Sport High Schools over the educational environment are assessed by the art and music teachers. In the framework of this goal, it was aimed to verify that aforesaid merger was the right move. Hence, the art and music teachers working for the merged or non-merged high schools were compared to see if there was any difference between their views. The dependent variables of the research were the teachers? views regarding the educational objectives of the Fine Arts and Sports High Schools, the specific objectives and the level of achievement of art and music education and the teacher?s assessments regarding the physical environment. On the other hand, the independent variables were gender, educational institution where the teacher graduated from, seniority, age and type of school where the teacher worked.The sampling of the research, consisted of 279 art or music teachers employed by 24 Fine Arts and Sports High Schools selected from the seven region of Turkey (Adana, Adıyaman, Aksaray, Amasya, Antalya, Bolu, Çorum, Diyarbakır, Edirne, Erzurum, Eskişehir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Isparta, Kars, Kayseri, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Kütahya, Mersin, Niğde, Samsun, Şanlıurfa, Tokat). In the selection of the samples, random sampling technique, which is one of the stochastic sampling methods, was used.The questionnaire prepared by the researcher, in which the views of art and music teachers regarding the merging of the Fine Arts High Schools and Sport High Schools were obtained, was used in the collection of the research data. The software package program of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) for Windows 11.5 was used to analyze the research data. Shapiro Wilk test was used to verify if the distribution of research data was normal, Levene test was used to check the homogeneity of variances and Factor Analysis was used to study the hypothesis of uni-dimensionality. In addition, Mann Whitney U test was used to determine whether there is a statistical difference between the scores given to the scales, Kruskal Wallis test was used to compare the independent groups of more than two and Conover multiple comparison tests were used to determine from which group were the variation in the result of the Kruskal Wallis test statistics resulted.The findings attained at the end of the research indicated that there was a correlation between the educational goals of the Fine Arts and Sports High Schools and the specific objectives of art and music education, and also that there was an adequate level of correlation between their education environment scores.The findings attained further indicated that, since the Sports High Schools affected the educational goals of the Fine Arts and Sports High Schools, the scores of the art teachers were higher than the music teachers according to the results obtained from the seniority groups for the art teachers and the type of schools for the music teachers, and that there was a substantial difference between the ages and genders of art teachers in terms of educational environment according to the types of schools for specific objectives of art education.In the light of the foregoing findings, it was concluded that conducting of experimental studies regarding the merging of the Fine Arts High Schools and the Sports High Schools and the aforesaid merging carried out by the Ministry of National Education did not actually have positive results on the art and music teachers at the Fine Arts and Sports High Schools and that due to the foregoing facts the merging needed to be reconsidered.Key Words: Visual Arts Education.
