The experimental setup of H2+ lazer ionization

In the last years numerous experiments were performed in which atomic reactions wereanalyzed by using a gas jet to form a target consisting of neutral particles. In order to getinformation about the time dependent behavior of the electrons, pump-probeexperiments with ultra short laser pulses have proved to be an appropriate tool.After measuring the vector momenta of several ions and electrons resulting from neutralgas targets, investigating ionic targets is a possible next step. To investigate laserinduced strong field ionization processes on ionic targets we adapt an experimentalsetup. Our experimental setup is consisting of an ion beam from the Frankfurt 2.5 MeVvan de Graaff Accelerator and a state of the art femtosecond TiSa laser. The setup is acrossed beam experiment between an ion and a laser beam. The aim of this experimentis measuring the momentum distribution of the electrons released from the ions by theThe setup allows us 4? high resolution electron-ion-coincidence measurements. Thedensity of the residual gas atoms at a pressure of 10-10 mbar is 2 x 106 particles /cm3,whereas we can achieve only a density of about 5 x 4 104 ions /cm3 with our accelerator.Due to this -density problem?, the laser will produce a good deal more electrons fromthe residual gas than from the ions. Fortunately the electrons originating from laser-ionreactions have an offset velocity of 6. 106 m/s in direction of the ion beam where theelectrons that originate from laser residual gas atom interactions only have a thermalvelocity. The spectrometer is designed in a way that enables only the electrons havingthis offset velocity to reach the detector.
