Abstract (EN)

After childhood and youth, people step into old age. Old age is a period in which various difficulties are experienced physically, spiritually and socially, and the elderly are representatives of this period. Over time, with the influence of mass media and globalization, the perception of old age that exists in the culture of societies and attitudes and behaviors towards the elderly have changed. Old age, which is a natural process, is seen as a period that should not be accepted today, ideologies that perceive young people as strong and productive, old people as helpless and consumers are trying to manipulate the elderly as a burden for society. Elderly people who are subjected to verbal or physical violence, neglect or abuse are subjected to all kinds of torture and cruelty in wars. The elderly have been deprived of health, education and social rights or even left to die during the Covid- 19 pandemic, which has affected the whole world. All these events have revealed the need to know the approach of the Islamic religion to the phenomenon of old age, the value it gives to the elderly, the rights of the elderly and the responsibilities of society towards the elderly have led to the preparation of the thesis entitled "Old Age and the Elderly in Islamic Society in the Context of Hadiths". This thesis consists of four chapters including the introduction, and a conclusion. In the introduction section, the purpose, importance, method and resources of the research are introduced. In the second part, the concepts of age, old age and senility, the definitions of old age in science, in the World Health Organization (WHO) and the definitions made at the United Nations (UN) have been explained. In the third part, the general characteristics of old age in the Sunnah, the material and spiritual treats given by Allah to the elderly and the facilities that the elderly will benefit from in the worship they have difficulty to do are mentioned. In the fourth chapter, the importance of the elderly and their priorities in social life, attitudes and behaviors to be taken towards them, as well as the rights of non-Muslim elderly people are discussed. In Islam, old age is a period that is respected. The elderly will be protected and taken care of by the society, they have some priorities in social life and privileges in religious practices that they have difficulty with. The elderly who are obedient to Allah and the societies that protect and take care of their elders are allowed material and spiritual treats.
