Regret and repentance in the hadith

Mankind, whose main purpose of creation is to serve Allah (swt), has been made the addressee of divine revelation by the supreme Creator and held responsible with some orders and prohibitions to achieve this purpose. Nevertheless, a person sometimes commits sins due to some stimuli such as his nafs, physical and spiritual needs, the seeming beauty of worldly life and the blessings in it, social environment and the devil, and therefore can moves away from the line of servitude. Since it is impossible to completely avoid sin, the individual will sooner or later experience regret as a result of his evil action, either in this world or in the hereafter. On the basis of his experience of this feeling, there are some worldly and otherworldly sanctions such as his self-condemnation for the sins he committed, fear of loss of social status or punishment, and the thought that he could not be a good servant and his spiritual bond with Allah weakened. There is also the feeling of sadness, uneasiness and unhappiness caused by these sanctions. At this stage, it is very important for the individual to manage the emotional process well, to act beyond mere regret and to conclude the process positively. This can only be possible with "repentance", which means abandoning sin and turning to obedience to Allah. In this way, the individual will get rid of the previously existing feeling of uneasiness and the fears arising from the sense of sinfulness, and these negative feelings will be replaced by the feeling of peace, being free from sin and forgiveness. At this point, the guidance and warnings of the last prophet sent to humanity, Prophet Muhammad (saws), about regret and repentance are of great importance. The Prophet (saws), who carried out his prophetic duty not by isolating himself from the society, but within the society and within the ordinary course of life, witnessed the words and actions of the people in the society he lived in, frequently warned them about acts that would result in regret, and guided them on how to cleanse and purify those who committed these acts nevertheless. Even though he never sinned, he stated that he repented a hundred times a day, and that every human being can make mistakes, but the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent. The Prophet (saws) appealed to people's minds and wills with concise examples and stories, and invited and encouraged them to repent before the day of reckoning, when regret will not benefit them. He did this by giving the good news that repentance is the leading deed that will make Allah the most happy, that the door of repentance is always kept open, and that those who repent will certainly be forgiven.
