Word groups in Halide Edip Adıvar's novel "Handan"

The aim of the study is to examine the word groups in novel "Handan" written in the original language of Halide Edip Adıvar and published 9th edition by Can Publishing in 2007. In line with this aim, first of all the concept of word group is defined through literature survey and then the word group varieties are determined. The studies of linguistic researchers on word groups regarding the subject are also examined. In this framework, Leylâ Karahan's work entitled "Syntax in Turkish" is considered the basic source. In the first section of the study, information regarding Halide Edip Adıvar's life, literary identity and works was presented and Halide Edip Adıvar's novel was introduced within the scope of the study. In the second section, linguists' word group definitions and classifications were included and the properties of word groups were discussed. The characteristics of each group was supported with examples from sentences in the novel "Handan." In the novel, samples from poems and from different examples were conveyed to increase the clarity of the characteristics of word groups even when they were small in number or when there were no samples fulfilling the characteristics of word groups or they were small in number. In the third chapter, the word groups of the sentences in the novel were determined by analyzing the novel "Handan" from beginning to end. In the evaluation and conclusion sections, the usage number of word groups in the novel were examined and the study was concluded with the general evaluation of the table. In conclusion, it was found that in the novel "Handan," adjective clause, preposition group and possessive construction were frequently used word groups, whereas number and exclamation group was the least used word group.
