Özet (EN)

Modality is considered a semantic category, providing information about the speaker's thoughts and psychology. Modality also lays out a framework to be divided into subcategories and different classifications. Linguists have decided about these categorizations according to their own perspective and native language so the issue has become complicated. In this study the novel Handan is analyzed within the framework of modality, based on the classification developed by Palmer (2001) using a typological approach. The study has an introduction section followed by two other chapters and results section. The issue studied in the dissertation is analyzed in two main chapters. In the first chapter the relationship between modality, time and appearance is analyzed while theoretical information about mode and modality is provided. In addition, various modality classifications, including the perspectives of Western sources as well as those of Turkish-Islamic logicians, are discussed. Lastly information is provided about the novel Handan, our topic of analysis, and its author Halide Edib Adıvar. In the second chapter modalities in the turkey Turkish are introduced, through the analysis of the Handan novel. In this chapter, other than modalities identified in Palmer's (2001) classification other modalities not identified in Palmer's classification, such as Necessitative, Excitement, Reinforcement, Question and Compassion, are also discussed under a different heading. In addition, markers of each modality category are identified and classified within. according to the context. Keywords: Modality, Handan novel. modality classifications, mode, Palmer
