Perception and behavior of professional ethics in public library employees: The case of Izmir province

Libraries/Information Centers act as an important bridge between the user and information in accessing information. Professional ethical principles that make librarians' responsibilities towards the profession written, which play an important role in compiling, organizing and making available to information, as in all library employees are indispensable values that play a decisive role in terms of the social dignity of the profession and the institution for the public library staff, who serve mostly with the society and whose doors are open to everyone. This study, professional ethical perception of librarians who work in the public libraries in Turkey and in this context, it has been prepared in order to determine the applicability status of professional ethics principles through the example of İzmir province. For this purpose, the library employees working in 38 Provincial/District Public Libraries in Izmir province were compiled and evaluated based on the answers given to these questions. The questions were transmitted by the method of survey technique. The responses of 89 people, including managers and library staff, were analyzed using the SPSS statistical software program. As a result of the responses given by the public library employees who participated in the survey, employees do not have enough awareness of professional ethical principles and in this direction, it is concluded that this sensitivity does not sufficiently reflect their professional behavior in the functioning of the public library, which serves a large part of the society. Updating and revising the principles of Professional Ethics in the light of today's changing dynamics of technology, and it has been pointed out how important the guidance of ethical principles will be in order for the library employees who are/are not Formation graduates to behave more self-efficaciously.
