Hanyalı Nuri Osman and His Divan

Hanyalı Nuri Osman lived in the cities , Hanya and Kandiye on Crete Island between 1172 ? 1230 according to the Islamic Calendar , 1758 ? 1815 according to the Gregorian Calendar. He managed to produce more than ten works of literature in his fifty-eight years life.The copies of his six works were discovered.Three of them were written in verse and the other three in prose.His voluminous Collected Poems (Divan) consisting of 1152 poems has been prepared as a critique in this thesis and added an analysis to its beginning.Nuri who wrote poems almost in all poetic forms tried his innovation attempts in his ghazals in terms of content and handled interesting issues in his short mesnevis.Nuri?s Collection gives us information about the social and political life in Crete.From this point of view we meet issues such as religious and national diversity, epidemic diseases which caused to many people?s death , public?s clothing style and appointments of statemen.A literary atmosphere were formed in Crete by the effect of Nuri?s poems.The statesmen were the pioneers and the public showed an interested in this atmosphere.Ferhat Paşa and Sami Ebu Bekir Paşa who owned collections (Divan) and were previous governors of Crete played an important role in the literary atmosphere.Another striking characteristic of Nuri?s Collection is that it tells about ninety poets for various reasons.In his books we saw the names of unknown poets whom we didn?t come across in the biography sources before and this enhances the importance of his Collection.With his 65 tahmis he is among the writers who wrote the most tahmis.Key Words1.
