A study on the concept of movement and its influence on modern architecture

ABSTRACTThe term ?movement?, which constitutes the standpoint of this study, is a word that isfrequently referred to in almost every aspect of life in the 21 st century we are experiencing,and has become the ABC of architecture. The connotations of movement, ranging frommoving from one place to another to the orchestrations of the human mind, are numerous. Inthis study, by taking the rich variety of meaning the term posits into consideration, itsinfluence on modern architecture in the context of culture, social interaction and technologicaldevelopments will be analysed. Hence, this study comprises four major sections, which allowfor not only individual, independent re-readings, but holistic, integral interpretations withinthe body of the study.In the first section of the study titled ?Philosophy and Its Reference To Movement?,?movement? is analysed as a concept, and the conditions and practices suggested by the termare probed into. This is followed by a foregrounding of the discourses related to ?movement?in the history of philosophy and sciences-as a consequence of what these discoursespropose; i.e., a strong competence in grasping, perceiving, and manipulating the concepts inthe world; and a specific attitude in interpreting life.In the second section of the study titled ?Modern Architecture and Movement?, the conditionsof the 19th century, which both generated the concept ?the world of action and movement?and initiated the critical processes as a result of which the ?modern world? was established,will be referred to. The influences of ?movement? on the theories and practices ofarchitecture, which were constructed as the discourses of modern architecture developed, willfollow.In the third section of the study titled ?Technology and Movement?, the term technology,which is regarded in today?s world as the equivalent of movement and speed in ametaphorical sense, will be analysed, and the manner in which it is expressed in the field ofarchitecture will be foregrounded.In the last section of the study titled ?The Metropolis and Movement?, as a consequence ofthe fact that ?movement? is best observed in cities, the metropolis, whose images recoil uponits very own self and thus concommitantly both nourish and renourish it hence theconnotations of its dynamic structure, will be focused on.
