Barmakids in the period of Harun al-Rashid

Since the foundation of the Abbasid Caliphate, the Barmakids, which is a family that has a Persian (Ajam, Iranian) ethnic origin, had been serving important duties within many different high-level positions, especially the vizier in the Abbasid Caliphate. In the historic scene, this family gained power and effectiveness in stages within the state, through the rise of the Abbasid Caliphate. The family reached the peak of its power in political, social, and economic ones during the period of Harun al-Rashid. Harun al-Rashid, on the other hand, eliminated the Barmakids family for some reasons (Jafar-Abbāsa relations, Barmakids gaining power and influence, Yahya b. Abdullah incident, ethnic and religious reasons) on which the sources are not in alliance with. This study comprises the activities carried out by the Barmakids family mostly during the Harun al-Rashid period. There are several previous studies about the Barmakids in Turkish literature. This study, compared to the previous ones on the subject, includes more detailed comparisons among the Barmakids family members. It also provides different historical narratives and analyses of their life and status during the period in which they were active. It is especially important for the development of new perspectives about the reasons for its disappearance. The main purpose in the preparation of this study, in addition to the previous ones about the Barmakids family, is to add new horizons and approaches to the historical literature in the light of different information. In the process of the study, the sources of the Classical Islamic history, the Turkish translation of some of them, copyrighted works were written in Arabic and Turkish, articles of the Islamic encyclopedia and research works translated into the Turkish language of Western authors were used. With this research, narratives that will create new perceptions about the Barmakids family have been reached. Among the reasons for Barmakids' elimination, information was obtained that the first and the most important reason could be their influence and power. Besides, it has been reached the idea that the final straw of Harun al-Rashid 's patience as the reason for Barmakids' attempt to eliminate may be one of the Jafar-Abbāsa relationship or one of Yahya b.
