Hasan Ali Toptaş's 'Gölgesizler' novel and imposibility

ABSTRACT The Austrian mathematician Kurt Gödel, in his article written in 1931, proved that it is impossible to prove the consistency of a system remaining inside that system and that such proofs will always be incomplete. His theory, called "Theory of Incompleteness" affected the Dutch painter M.C. Escher, who drew pictures showing situations which were impossible in the real physical world. Gödel's theory, of incompleteness and Escher's impossible drawings influenced the postmodern literature strongly as would be expected. Hasan Ali Toptaş, one of the most famous contemporary Turkish authors, also used "impossible" and "incomplete" structures in his novel Gölgesizler. In this thesis, Toptaş' s text {Gölgesizler) is discussed according to Genette's discourse analysis and is interpreted according to the theory of incompleteness. Vll
