Prof. Dr. Mehmet KORUK February-2004, 84 pages ABSTRACT The research was conducted as a descriptive and experimental-control in order to determine quality of life in patients with Irritable (Spastic) Bowel Syndrome. The work was consisted of 40 patients with gastrointestinal complaints and 40 healthy individuals as a control grup in Gastroenterology Outpatient Unit in the Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine Research Hospital and Avukat Cengiz Gökçek State Hospital between December 2002 and July 2003. In order to obtain data, in addition to Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life Evaluation Scale, the interview. form included personal socio-demographic variables and the informative knowledge of illness form prepared by the researcher were used. In the statistical analysis of the data percentage calculation, Student t test and two way variance analysis were used. According to the results the arithmetric mean point of control group was found significantly higher than that of patients and the negative effects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome on the quality of life of patients was concluded (p= 0.0001). Suggestions considered to be useful for the improvement of the quality, of life of patients were given by the researcher. Key Words: Irritable bowel syndrome, quality of life.
