The effect of communication skills of patients/patient relatives and health workers on violence tendency

The aim of our study is to determine the relationship between communication skills and violence tendencies of patients, patient relatives and healthcare professionals, and the factors affecting communication skills and violence tendencies of patients/relatives and healthcare professionals. Our research is descriptive and relationship-seeking. The population of the research consisted of healthcare professionals working in three public hospitals operating in the city center of Tokat, patients and their relatives who received service from these hospitals in outpatient clinics between August 10, 2021 and October 30, 2021 and continued to receive services in inpatient services. Two hundred patients who agreed to participate in the study, two hundred patients' relatives and one hundred seventy-two healthcare professionals, comprised the sample group of five hundred and seventy-two patients/relatives and healthcare professionals. The data of the study were obtained with the Information Form, the Attitudes towards Violence Scale (ŞYTÖ), and the Communication Skills Inventory (HCI), which were created separately for three groups. SPSS 23.0 program was used in the evaluation of our research data. While the compatibility with normal distribution was examined with the Kolmogorov Smirnov test, Spearman's rho correlation coefficient was used in the data that was not normally distributed, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was used in the data that was normally distributed. The data obtained were evaluated by linear regression analysis and it was tried to determine the risk factors related to the descriptive features in our information form, which are effective on the communication skills and violence tendencies of the patients/relatives and healthcare professionals. In our study, there was a statistically significant, positive and weak relationship between SHIT and IBE scores for healthcare professionals; a statistically significant, positive and weak correlation between SHIT and IBE scores for sick individuals; For the relatives of the patients, a statistically significant, positive and weak correlation was found between SHIT and IBE scores. According to our regression analysis result; A significant relationship was found between our variables of age, gender, marital status, education, place of residence, occupation, evaluation of communication in the working environment, evaluation of the service provided, and self-harm, and ICI and SHIT scores. It is thought that strengthening the communication skills of patients/relatives and health workers and determining the risk factors that affect the phenomenon of violence will contribute to the solution of the problem, in order to prevent the increasing violence in the field of health as in every field.
