Comparison of the effects of haloperidol, dexamethasone and ondansetron in patients receiving tramadol in patient controlled analgesia

Abstract (EN)
Objective: It was aimed to compare the efficacy of haloperidol, dexamethasone and ondansetron on postoperative nausea and vomiting and on the consumption of tramadol in patients undergoing abdominal surgery with patient controlled analgesia (PCA) using tramadolMaterial and Method: Our study was held on 100 patients undergoing on elective laparotomy after having the approval of drug research ethical committee and patient written consent form. Patients were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=25). Patients were received 4 mg of ondansetron in Group O, 1.25 mg haloperidol in Group H, 4 mg dexamethason in Group D, and 2 ml 0.09% NaCl in Group S (control group), intravenously. General anesthesia was achieved with sevofluran and nitrous oxide. In all groups, following intravenous loading dose of 1.5 mg/kg tramadol, postoperative analgesia was achieved with a bolus dose of 0.2 mg/kg, which was administered with PCA with a lock-out of 10 minutes. Antiemetic drug doses were repeated every 8 hoursHeart rates, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, vomitting and sedation scores, pain and nausea scores, and analgesia consumption were recorded in the first 24 hours postoperativelyResults: Haloperidol, dexamethasone and ondansetron decreased nausea scores in a same extent. Vomitting scores were found higher in control group only during extubation. Tramadol consumption has no difference among the study groups during the first 24 hours. Pain scores were lower in haloperidol group than the control group only in 12th hour. Sedation score was higher in haloperidol group than the serum physiologic in the 60. minuteConclusion: Following elective laparotomy, in patients having tramadol PCA, prophylactic administration of haloperidol, dexamethason or ondansetron reduced the frequency of nausea in a same extent when compared to control group, but did not affect the tramadol consumption in the first 24 hours.
