Examination of the relationship between the hospital environment and the levels of employee's well-being, occupational stress and burnout

Objective: In this study, it is aimed to examine the relationship between the hospital environment and employees' well-being, job stress and burnout levels. Material and Methods: This analytic and cross-sectional research was conducted on 332 healthcare workers employed in Aydın Adnan Menderes University Hospital. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire which comprises sociodemogroaphic characteristics and quantification of the opinions of the participants on the physical and psycosocial factors of the hospital envoriment. The levels of well-being, job stres and burnout among the subjects were consecutively analysed by using Warwick-Edinburgh Mental well-being scale, A-20 Job stres scale and Maslach Burnout scale. In the descriptive statistical analysis of the data, Spearman's Rho, Mann-Whitney-U ve Kruskall-Wallis tests were used. Results: Characterization of the noise levels to be high and the lighting, daylighting and ventilation levels to be low were found to be associated with the increment in the levels of job stres (p<0,05). Emotinal exhaustion and depersonalization levels were found to be increased by the characterization of the lighting and ventilation levels as low (p<0,05). Emotinal exhaustion levels were increased by the characterization of the noise levels as high and daylighting levels as low (p<0,05). Characterization of the levels of the inter-employee communication, teamwork, working time period, salary, participation in desicion-making processes, participation in inspection processes, carrer development oppurtunities and the instutution culture as low were found to be associated with increased levels of job stres, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. However, characterization of the levels of the above mentioned variables as high were found to be associated with the decreased leves of the job stres, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization (p<0,05). Characterization of the social support level as low was found to be associated to the decreased levels of job stres, emotional exhaustion end depersonalization; on the other hand characterzation of the social support level as high was found to be associated to increased levels of well-being (p<0,05). Conclusion: In this study, it was concluded that physical and psychosocial environmental factors have an effect on health workers' well-being, job stress and burnout levels.
